I've been a Cursor fan - and a paying customer - for years. I still remember the first time I tried that magical tab-completion, the "shut up and take my money" moment 2 years ago. But it's getting harder and harder to justify the subscription. This has been a problem for years now. Cursor is always based on a 7-8 month old VSCode build on average, and that matters because extension updates simply refuse to install. For the last 10 months Cursor has been based on VSCode release 1.105.0. Before that - a similar 9-month cycle on version 1.99.3. Two weeks ago they bumped the version to 1.125.0 which is already 7 releases behind. 10 months is a big deal. This industry moves at an insane pace right now - the entire AI coding space reinvents itself every couple of months. Models get replaced, agents show up, whole categories of tools appear and die within 2 months. After almost every update, Cursor decides it now boots into the "Agent" view by default. You switch back to the IDE, restart the app - and you're back in the Agent view again. And the setting that controls this is moved and renamed every time. At this point I really can't tell whether it's an honest bug or a deliberate dark pattern to guide people into the new view. Neither answer is great. Anyway, shout out for Colin, the support rep answering these threads - he didn't make this decision, but he has to stand up for it. I get that Cursor is trying to prioritize the agentic workflow but the thing is - when I really need an agent, I'll just use Codex and Claude Code. Ironically, I can do that right inside Cursor. Claude and Codex "Max" plans already make more sense than paying Cursor to resell the same underlying models. I've reported about 7 bugs during the last year, all of them still unfixed (sometimes even unanswered).
